Synopsis: This title is for people who lead groups or who take part in groups of any kind. It describes a method of building trust in both new and established groups based on a session which has been used regularly and successfully for guests who visit the Findhorn Foundation every year. The book is a practical manual which provides detailed guidelines for preparing and presenting a "Group Discovery" session, including complete instructions for 67 exercises and games. The method is simple, yet complex in the way that it works. On an individual level, it provides sessions on light-hearted games and exercises designed to give participants insight into their own personality and behaviour. On a group level the method fosters authentic human contact, communication, co-operation, trust and unity. Goodwill increases and group dynamics are enhanced. As a result, a collective group consciousness begins to emerge and the group functions more effectively, whatever its purpose and responsibilities may be.(Amazon.co.uk) |
Good
stuff for novice and experienced group leaders.
I saw this book being used by a trainer I was working with, and had to
buy it. It covers all types of groups, from a bunch of friends coming together to arrange a holiday away, to experienced therapeutic groups. The authors forgo the normal forming, storming etc in favour of a more sophisticated model of group development, and then elegantly show how this model can apply to all groups. ... This is a powerful text, suitable for all levels, with stuff you will want to read over and over again. If you only buy one "group" book, get this one... Review: At last - a
clear guide to communication without
the gimmick.
This book has become an invaluable guide in our training department,
where we were having to take a "one size fits all" approach to dealing
with individuals with diverse needs due to the cost of sending our team
on expensive networking and communications training - none of which
covered the broad range of issues we needed. Tizzard's style is
refreshingly staighforward and non-jargonistic, without being
patronising. The layout lent itself well to my flick and find method of
researching (hurrah) and has obviously been written by a seasoned
practitioner as well as intelligent theoretician. (from a reviewer at
Amazon.co.uk) Review: No quicker way of bringing a spark to your training sessions. When designing your training sessions one of the keys to success is hooking in your delegates straight away. This pocketbook may be small, but is crammed with excellent ideas on how to grab the group and set the scene. Unlike other icebreaker books I've seen, the authors of this one have gone one step further and grouped them under common course headings. So under "Communication" there are 10 activities for you to choose from! (from another reviewer at Amazon.co.uk) |
Synopsis: Workplace teams need to be effective just as professional sports teams do. This problem-solving reference lays down the guidelines for team leaders and members. It discusses how to: define the roles and responsibilities of team members; select team members and encourage positive behavior; facilitate participation at team meetings; deal with the fear of losing control; evaluate and reward teams; determine what kind of training to offer. The author uses bullet-points to make tips and rules easy to grasp, and end-of-chapter questions to illuminate key issues. (Amazon.co.uk) |

A practical, readable and affordable introduction to groupwork with useful matchstick figure illustrations! It also demonstrates gestalt concepts in action - a whole person approach to development. Based on the author's BBC TV programmes. Recommended even at its full price! (Roger Greenaway) |
Review: The haircuts may not be timeless, but the games are. The book is well designed with well thought out connections between one activity and the next. It's a real ''page-turner'' - not what you'd expect in a book that is really just a collection of games. You will find these games repackaged in more modern looking books. I prefer the original treatment - and the current used book price makes this irrestible! (reviewed by Roger Greenaway) See review at Amazon.com |
Synopsis: Describes the rules for a variety of cooperative games and briefly describes the origins of some of the games. |
From the Inside Flap:
An extraordinary book that will dramatically change the way you
experience life.
Finite games are the familiar contests of everyday life, the games we
play in business and politics, in the bedroom and on the battlefied --
games with winners and losers, a beginning and an end. Infinite games
are more mysterious -- and ultimately more rewarding. They are
unscripted and unpredictable; they are the source of true freedom.
In this elegant and compelling work, James Carse explores what these
games mean, and what they can mean to you. He offers stunning new
insights into the nature of property and power, of culture and
community, of sexuality and self-discovery, opening the door to a world
of infinite delight and possibility.
"An extraordinary little book . . . a wise and intimate companion, an
elegant reminder of the real."

Synopsis: Challenging managers to reexamine their assumptions about effective leadership, a study of organizations and human relations explores thirty paradoxical situations and the impact of effective leadership. (Amazon.co.uk) |
Book Description:
In business, politics, marriage, indeed in any significant
relationship, trust is the essential precondition upon which all real
success depends. But what, precisely, is trust? How can it be achieved
and sustained? And, most importantly, how can it be regained once it
has been broken? In Building Trust, Robert C. Solomon and Fernando Flores offer compelling answers to these questions. They argue that trust is not something that simply exists from the beginning, something we can assume or take for granted; that it is not a static quality or "social glue." Instead, they assert that trust is an emotional skill, an active and dynamic part of our lives that we build and sustain with our promises and commitments, our emotions and integrity. In looking closely at the effects of mistrust, such as insidious office politics that can sabotage a company's efficiency, Solomon and Flores demonstrate how to move from naïve trust that is easily shattered to an authentic trust that is sophisticated, reflective, and possible to renew. As the global economy makes us more and more reliant on "strangers," and as our political and personal interactions become more complex, Building Trust offers invaluable insight into a vital aspect of human relationships.(Amazon.co.uk) |

Synopsis The "back to nature" story of the man who threw his nine-to-five job in the City to become a forest worker. It explains how he came to terms with the hardships of the land and how his friendships with the local characters and with Buck, an orphaned faun, developed. (Amazon.co.uk) |
Synopsis The name of John Muir has come to stand for the protection of wild land and wilderness in both American and Britain. Born in Dunbar in the east of Scotland in 1838, Muir is famed as the father of American conservation, and as the first person to promote the idea of national parks. Combining acute observation with a sense of inner discovery, Muir's writings of his travels through some of the greatest landscapes on Earth, including the Carolinas, Florida, Alaska and those lands which were to become the great National Parks of Yosemite and the Sierra Valley, raise an awareness of nature to a spiritual dimension. These journals provide a marriage of scientific survey and natural history. This collection, including the never-before-published "Stickeen", presents the best of Muir's writings. He is the author of "The Mountains of California", "Our National Parks", "The Yosemite" and "Steep Trails". (Amazon.co.uk) |
This beautifully designed and illustrated book is a real classic. A brief and compelling outline of the author's philosophy is followed by a series of games that help young people (of all ages!) see, feel, hear and touch nature in new ways that sensitise, educate and excite. (Roger Greenaway) |
