If
NLP is about improving communications why
does it not have a title that communicates itself more clearly? The
original books on NLP ('Frogs into Princes' and 'The Structure of
Magic') give the impression that NLP is the art of magicians. No wonder
sales forces around the world are being trained in NLP. But several
research studies have questioned the effectiveness of NLP. On the other
hand, trainers using NLP techniques may be wandering, poorly equipped,
into the world of therapy.
Key issues about NLP are presented in two (free to view) articles in the Training Journal. The debate is kicked off by Garry Platt who presents a fairly critical view of NLP (based on many research studies). See: NLP: Neuro-Linguistic Programming or No Longer Plausible?. Sue Knight replies with NLP: Neuro-Linguistic Programming or Never the Less Popular? Also see Dylan Morgan's A Scientific Assessment of NLP which was published in the Journal of the National Council for Psychotherapy and Hypnosis. Professor Robert Todd Carrol's article about NLP in The Skeptics Dictionary will help to keep your critical faculties alive when you encounter NLP. Below you will find the NLP books with the best reviews listed first, starting with an affordable, low cost, clear and practical introduction to NLP by Andrew Bradbury. (Roger Greenaway) |

knowledge in maximizing the effectiveness of interpersonal
transactions. This manual demonstrates that a person with a grasp of
the basics of NLP can expect a significant improvement in every aspect

environment; and managing mental activities for greater
self-management. There are mini case studies and action points.

Paperback - 360 pages, July, 2001 |
Metaphors in Mind presents a broad integration of deep perspectives about helping people learn how to facilitate their own creativity in solving their own problems in their own way. Well done! (Caroline Myss, Ph.D. best selling author of "Anatomy of the Spirit" and "Why People Don't Heal")
Tompkins and Lawley have written a book that provides people with a tool for profound analysis and insight. The use of metaphors as a means of evaluating how you order your world, your relationships, your occupation, and interpret the experiences of your life is invaluable. This book should be read by everyone who has an interest in expanding their awareness of why they say the things they do, and discovering how the 'contents' of their lives are sources of empowerment (Ernest Rossi, Ph.D, Author of "Dreams, Consciousness and; Spirit" and "The Psychobiology of Mind-Body Healing")
Synopsis:
Presents the reader with a holistic, integrated and principle-centred
approach for solving personal and professional problems.
Review (extract): As with many self-help books, much of what you read here is based on basic common sense and can at times be irritatingly obvious. However, what Covey manages to do so successfully is to break down the barriers which prevent all of us from taking a long hard look at ourselves, and then gradually introduces new rules which allow us to move first from dependence to independence and then towards the ultimate goal of interdependence. But of course, the only real way to test the value of The Habits--be proactive, begin with the end in mind, put first things first, think "win/win", seek first to understand and then to be understood, synergise, sharpen the saw-- is to work on them. This book is as good as any place to start on the road to self-awareness and self-improvement in the workplace and in the home without becoming too irritatingly smug and self-satisfied.
